Let me start this post by saying I’m surprised any of you even read this anymore. My posting is SUPER sporadic which left me thinking I’d be posting blogs that only I would read. I’ve decided that as flakey as I am about blogging, I really enjoy having notes about my life over the past few years…especially because I’ve become terrible about journaling. So, thanks for coming along for the ride :)
So we had 2 parties this weekend! Friday night was an awesome small group get together where there was pasta, bread, and more pasta! Fortunately there was wine! I ended up digging the sausage and veggies out of one of the pastas, I ate the tomato, basil and balsamic out of the caprese salad and I ate some yummy vegan dip (sans pita). I was super disappointed to be missing out on all of the other delicious food, but Lent is Lent so I stuck to my resolve (just barely).
I can tend to be pretty disciplined when I really, really want to be, but let me tell you this has been tough! If not for the spiritual fast aspect of this journey, I totally would have cheated on Friday night. I had a few glasses of wine and by the time the ride home came around, my guard was down just enough that I thought very seriously about sneaking a few bites of the chicken alfredo I was carrying home on my lap. If there was ever a moment I was going to fail this fast, that was it. But I made it!
Saturday night we celebrated my aunt’s 50th birthday with another delicious Italian feast. My cousin Steven is a fabulous cook and turning down his food was tough. Thank God there was a nice, big salad with balsamic dressing. I also chowed down on his mouth watering amogio sauce. I could take a bath in that stuff! Seriously it is tomato and garlic goodness like you can’t even imagine. I poured tons of it over the italian sausage, onion and green peppers that I ate. Yummo!
This morning was the first Sunday in a long time that we didn’t stop for bagels on the way home from church. It actually wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Usually by the middle of the sermon I’m already jonesin’ for an asiago bagel topped with fluffy cream cheese. This morning we did go out for breakfast and I chowed down on a veggie omelet. Mmmm!
The message this morning continued to challenge me. I’m committed to prayer during this fast and let me tell you I have food on my mind a lot more than I’d like to admit, so I’m really working hard at steering my mind from what I can eat to reaching out to God. I haven’t been doing as well as I’d like, but I have renewed fervor after this morning. God is moving all around us and we just have to be willing to join Him in what He is doing.
Lord, continue to make my heart beat for the things that yours beats for.
