Monday evening, on my way home from work, I stopped by a local nursery to pick up some annuals for the year. I normally try to make it to the Eastern Market Annual Flower Day to stock up on blossoms and foliage for the year, but this year it just wasn’t going to happen.
Believing that late is better than never, I made my rounds at the nursery and picked up 2 large arrangements for the front porch, 2 hanging baskets and 2 flats of impatiens. This seemed like a good balance between “do it yourself” and “ready to go” since I knew this big, pregnant body wasn’t up for my normal “do it all yourself” routine.
I got home, changed into a tank top and shorts (thanks for the shorts Andy!) and unloaded the car. Placing the big pots on the front porch was quick, easy and instantly gratifying! Hanging one basket in the front and the other in the back was also great! The 2 flats of “do it yourself” impatiens were another story…
Fortunately, I’d spent a couple of hours a few weeks ago clearing out the flower beds in the front, so getting the impatiens in along the border was pretty simple. The backyard was a whole other story! I had an entire season’s weeds to contend with (not to mention the jungle of crap growing through, under and over the fence line from my neighbor). I was literally muttering to myself about how unfair it is that the junk on his side of the fence practically takes over the gardens on my side. He’s like 126 years old though, so there’s not much I can do about it. Anyone know a good, cheap fencing company?? Maybe I could replace the chain link membrane between our yards with a good, sturdy, wood privacy fence!
So anyway, I weeded. And I weeded. And I clipped and clipped. And bagged and bagged. And weeded some more. Finally there was enough clean, open dirt to plant the rest of the impatiens! Once I got them all in the ground, I watered everything and spent the rest of the night on the couch moaning and groaning about all my aching muscles.
I’ll post pix once I get home tonight…things are still a little young looking, but I’m hoping the rain today and regular TLC will make it all fill in quickly!

Doesn't it feel good though? Gardens have a way of transforming things very quickly, but it does require “elbow grease!” You go girls….
