I’ve decided that hospitals are the next best thing to a spa. They give you a comfy gown to wear, tell you to lie down and relax under a blanket, they wait on you hand and foot, and then they wheel you out to your driver when it’s time to go home. There is of course the whole cutting your body open and sewing it back up again part….but when you are asleep for that it’s no big deal!
My surgery went very well last week, and I just met with my surgeon on Monday and he told me that I’m healing perfectly! YAY! It was crazy to see how long my incision was…it runs across the entire width of my toe. I guess the rule of plastic surgery (why he would have to follow the rules of plastic surgery when dealing with the underside of my toe I have no idea, but anyway) is that the cut has to be 3 times as wide as it is tall. Apparently I will have minimal scarring, so I can continue pursuing a career as a foot model!
The biggest pain about this whole thing hasn’t even been the pain, or the ugly shoe, or all the questions I am asked about it every day. The biggest pain has been showering! I can’t get the incision wet which means that I have to protect my entire right foot from the water. I have figured out that tying a grocery bag around my ankle keeps the splatters off as long as that foot is propped up on the edge of the bathtub. This means that I pretty much stand on my left leg only while showering. (a word to the wise: don’t lean your head back too quickly when rinsing your hair…it will cause you to lose your balance!)
Only 8 more days of this!

My name is Rebecca, too, and I just had my second granuloma removed from my left big toe. It reappeared 5 months after surgery from the same place. First time it was cut out by a podiatrist, and this time by a dermatologist in his office with a local anesthetic, which in itself was more painful than I’ve ever experienced, and the injections were long and slow. I was able to drive myself home since it was my left foot affected.
I agree it’s the showering that is the biggest inconvenience. There are good water-blocking band-aids, which I did use. Because this was my second go-round at this, I prepared in advance with some baby wipes for what we used to call “sponge baths”. I also invented my own sitting-half-shower, where I strattle the tub wall with a small towel for my “saddle”, keeping my wounded foot outside the tub. I use the hand-held shower head (carefully) or I just use the bath faucet to bathe with a wash cloth.
OK, so I haven’t been checking your blog as much as usual, so I just found out about your surgery. Poor baby. Make sure Andy gives you lots and lots of TLC. Your Mom obviously has forgotten about Grandma Marilyn’s poor feet! She (your Mom) got all the pretty feet genes. Well, glad you got this taken care of. I’ll be praying for a quick recovery. Good luck in the shower. Love you bunches. Aunt Becky
I love reading your blog, you’re soooo cute, you make me laugh!!! You know, nice feet do run in the family…
I adore you,
Mom :)
lol! having a big belly can make you lose your balance in the shower too! glad your toe is doing better!
