Monday was my dad’s 48th Birthday. I left work early to drive out to the lovely Irish Hills to surprise him. When I got to my parents house, I walked quietly inside and asked my mom where dad was. She steered me in the right direction and I walked in saying, “I heard someone around here is having a Birthday!” He jumped up and gave me a big hug. My dad is not an overly emotional or sentimental person, but I could tell that he was genuinely surprised to see me and touched that I made the journey to see him for only the couple of hours we had before he had a meeting.
After my surprise arrival, we all headed to the family room to give him our gifts. Ellen, John Paul and I all pitched in to update my dad’s sense of fashion. We have talked among ourselves for a while now about the fact that his jeans and braided leather belt are not up to speed on the highway of fashion. He’s a good looking guy, and is doing just fine in the area of shirts and shoes, but the tapered ankle jeans and stretched out braided leather belt had to go! We got him an awesome pair of slightly faded dark jeans that had a wide leg and a non-tapered ankle. We also got him a wide brown leather belt with a nice square gold buckle. We all went crazy when he tried them on! He looked SO great! The only problem was that the jeans were a little too long. Right now I’m on a mission to find a pair that has the same waist, but a shorter inseam…I really hope I can get them and soon!
After the “hip-new-jeans” hype died down we moved into the dining room for dinner. My mom prepared an incredible dinner of filet mignon, baked potatoes, steamed asparagus and ceasar salad. We all feasted till we were full and then indulged in a delicious carrot cake with creamy frosting. I think dad had a very simple, yet memorable birthday!

Thanks. You’ve made me hungry…and jealous. Nice one on updating the parental unit’s style. Dad’s need to keep with the times.
