In the 1960′s, Clifton Fadiman, an American writer, editor and New Yorker book reviewer wrote “A cheese may disappoint. It may be dull, it may be naive, it may be over sophisticated. Yet it remains, cheese, milk’s leap toward immortality.”
Milk’s leap toward immortality.
Isn’t that so fitting?
I mean cheese is just SO DARN GOOD.
Unless it’s Kenyan cheese.
In which case you’d enjoy a slurp of vomit more.
No joke.
There aren’t any Kenyan restaurants for a reason.
Truth.
*I lived there for a year in 2000, so I speak from experience.
But I digress…
This post is about string cheese.
Years ago, I asked Andy what kinds of food would be exciting to see when he opened the fridge.
I already knew some of my answers but wanted to hear what I should start stocking to keep my man happy when he opened the fridge.
I don’t remember exactly what he said, but I remember my first answer.
String cheese.
Seriously.
Growing up, I loved to open the fridge and see that my mom had bought a pack of string cheese at the grocery that week.
It’s like the perfect snack.
1. It’s cheese.
2. It’s fun!
3. It’s individually wrapped and handy to grab fast.
4. It’s cheese.
As a grown woman, I’d often grab two (or more!) sticks of string cheese for a snack and happily tear them apart string by string. Enjoying every strand.
So, even though I’m eating clean these days, which means I avoid dairy for the most part, I still love me some string cheese from time to time.
I generally have some on hand because it’s nice to grab for Grace’s lunch. She loves her PB&J’s, but being the wheat hater that I am, I often coax her toward other lunch options.
This plate is pretty typical for Grace…
She really likes these smorgasbord kind of lunches, and I’m happy that she’s gobbling up healthy foods like avocado and bell pepper.
A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from Frigo® Cheese Heads® String Cheese.
They asked if I was interested in receiving a variety of string cheeses to try.
Um, yes.
THE ANSWER TO “DO YOU WANT FREE CHEESE?” IS ALWAYS YES.
I immediately replied to their email with my address and within about a week I received a big cooler box containing an assortment of string cheese!
Grace and I tore open the box right away to check out our cheese present!
We were pretty excited…as evidenced by Grace’s cheesy smile. (pun intended)
True to form, I wanted to try them all immediately, so we dug in!
Grace always asks me to “string it” so I happily obliged and we sat together eating strand by strand like a couple of giddy school girls.
Don’t be fooled…not all string cheese is created equal.
Some is rubbery and bland.
Some is dry and hard to string.
And some is the perfect storm of delicious salty cheesiness AND delightfully easy stringy-ness.
The Frigo® Cheese Heads® String Cheese was definitely the latter!
We’ve enjoyed every single string of it since the day we first opened the box.
The Frigo® Cheese Heads Swirls ® Cheese is a fun mix of mild mozzarella and tangy cheddar.
And the Frigo® Cheese Heads Superstring® Cheese boasts an extra dose of Vitamins A & D while tasting every bit as delicious as the original.
So yeah, I guess you could say we were pleased :)
I still try to mostly fuel our family with plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts & seeds and clean meats, but when we eat dairy (particularly for lunch or a quick snack) string cheese is one of our favorite go-to’s.
This assortment of string cheeses from Frigo® was everything that string cheese should be.
It may have even swayed my loyalty from Trader Joe’s organic string cheese.
Maybe :)
Be sure to check out this brand on your next shopping trip!
Saputo provided me with free cheese to try, but all opinions are expressly my own. I was not compensated to write this post, other than agreeing to receive a sampling of their products.
