This year more than any other, I have really enjoyed spending time outside in the dirt! I started planting flowers, digging beds and taking a stab at gardening when we first moved in 3 years ago, but back then it always seemed more like a chore than a hobby. This year all the things I planted over the past couple of years have really started to mature, so it’s much more rewarding than in years past. It’s hard to use a camera to really capture the way things are coming together, and its hard to distinguish my stuff from all the weeds along my neighbor’s fence line :( but here are a few pix:
The left side of the porch
Day lilies, coral bells, leftover annuals, foxglove, lilac bushes
Cool purple things, yellow lilies, black-eyed susans
Leftover annuals, prized stargazer lily, cool purple thing, clematis
My neighbor’s unkept house and yard have really been bothering me this year. I don’t hold it against him…he’s a very sweet elderly man who just doesn’t have the strength to take care of the house anymore. His son comes over to mow the lawn from time to time, but that’s pretty much the extent of the yard work that gets done over there. I’m thinking about splitting some of my Hostas and then using them as an excuse to talk to him about me doing some yard work for him. I really enjoy being outside, I’d love to be able to do something nice for him, and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings not to have to look at all his weeds anymore! So maybe, if I tell him I have some extra Hostas that I don’t want to throw out, he would be willing to let me plant them over at his place. While I’m over there I can attack the weeds and spread some Preen…hmm.
I’ll mull it over for a couple of days and let you know how it goes.

I think it is a fabulous idea not only to take care of the weed problem from your neighbor, but to connect with him. He will enjoy your visit, how sweet. Please let us know the outcome.
