For the last few months I’ve really been giving Andy a hard time for not being able to surprise me. I’m really perceptive and I’m able to read him especially well, so the combination means that I figure out almost everything he plans before it happens. It could be as little as guessing that he’ll stop to get ice cream on the way home or more complicated like figuring out what he planned to do for our anniversary because he wasn’t quite crafty enough to hide it from my all-observant eye. But this time he really got me. Really, really got me!
Last week after dinner one night he says he has something to tell me. He had a really serious look on his face, so I naturally was very worried. I don’ t even really know what I thought he might say, but it didn’t look good. He proceeds by saying, “I couldn’t get us into Hotel 31, but we’re going to be staying at a place on the Upper West Side.” I just looked at him like he had 10 heads…Hotel 31 is “our hotel” in New York City…what on earth is he talking about…is this for real….am I awake?
So I look at him and ask what the heck he is talking about! He tells me that we are leaving Friday morning for a long weekend in New York City. I was totally shocked. I didn’t even know what to say. I couldn’t even figure out which weekend he was talking about until I opened up my calendar and actually looked at the little boxes that said September 30, October 1, 2 and 3. Because the weekend was broken betweeen two calendar months, I hadn’t even really seen it. I almost didn’t know that weekend existed and suddenly I was going to be in New York for it.
Then came all the questions….when did you plan this….how did I not see it on the credit card….you already asked my boss for the time off….are you serious….they let you use their credit card…what is the name of the hotel….what are we going to do…can we afford this…what am I going to wear…I thought you wanted to be at home on your birthday…my boss knows about this…what were we supposed to be doing this weekend…oh my gosh….oh my gosh….
I remained in a state of shock for several hours. I was finally able to feel really excited the next day. I called a couple of friends to brag about how crafty he was and how I couldn’t even believe it. Then I made sure to write out the check for the friends who let Andy use their credit card to book the trip. I did laundry, dusted off my rolling suitcase, made a list of the things I wanted to do while we were there and started throwing out the things in the fridge that would spoil while we were gone. I was totally surprised that he was able to pull the whole thing off without me knowing.
About six weeks ago he surprised me by getting me a book that I had been wanting to buy. I joked with him that now that he was able to surprise me with something small he could start moving on to bigger things. By that time he had already booked our trip!
I have to hand it to him…he did a great job.
