I am the Big “D,” Rebecca’s mom…I hide in the anonimity of my screen name – Diogenes. Have Rebecca call you and tell you.
Now as to the quote: “Criticism is the death gargle of a non-achiever.” I disagree with the literal meaning of this quote, but probably agree with the meaning that is usually used, and the one I am sure that you intend.
Being critical; which is to say evaluating according to a particular standard, is one of the God given endowments that separate us from the apes. Ironically, it had to be a critical mind observing this criticism that penned those words. So again, in literal terms, I disagree.
But I will readily concede that it is far easier for most people to destroy than to build. That is the M.O. of Satan himself; to steal, kill, and destroy; rather than give, birth, and create. Most of the time criticism becomes complaining and shooting down, rather than understanding and encouraging.
So, in conclusion, to be able to criticize is a gift and a tool meant for good – to tear someone down to build one’s own ego is a common way that gift is abused. Just don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater…that’s all. :)
